Wind Energy
Interested in using wind to develop electricity? It has been
done for years. Wind energy was used by farmers and factories and today, windmills are growing at an alarming
rate.

What Has Gone Before?
Windmills were first used to pump water for agriculture and domestic use. As time went
on, windmills began to be used for grinding grain and other farm products. Even up to
the middle of the 20th century, windmills were still used to pump water for livestock and
other farming needs.
Today, the windmill has taken on a new look and a new purpose. To use the wind to
generate electricity, not just for a single residency, but for an entire town, city or state.

Where Are They Now?
If you take Interstate 10 in California, you can see a large farm of windmills as you
approach Los Angeles from the east. Texas has several large farms of windmills and is currently the largest
producer of wind energy. Even with this spurt of growth, the United States is still producing only one per
cent of its electrical needs from wind energy.
How Big Is It?
Is Wind Energy truly a good energy source? A windmill, with
today’s criteria, is expensive to build. The tall structure has to be built with the
right foundation. You have to get the parts for the turbine and rotor blades. To build, you need the specific
construction crew to put it up.
Windmills are getting bigger. The larger the windmill, the wind energy generated goes
up exponentially. In 1981, rotors were ten meters long with a rating of 25
kilowatts. In 2000, rotors are over seventy feet long with a rating of over 1,600
kilowatts. Over the last ten years, these windmills are getting bigger and generating
more wind energy.
What about Residential Areas?
For homes, one megawatt of wind energy can supply electricity for 225 to 300 homes.
With a large windmill, you can supply enough electricity for a small town or factory. With fuel costs going
up, windmills supply a nice clean alternative.
Where Are They Being Built?
Large families of windmills are being developed along farmlands, lakes and oceans.
Oceans can provide the room to build record setting rotor spans. Flat areas and oceans provide easy access to
build the units and supply record amounts of wind energy.
Windmills are not developed in urban areas. The close proximity to tall buildings,
along with the roads and freeways, may cause a potential hazard and catastrophe. There are fewer problems to
deal with off shore.

How Effective Are They?
Wind energy does not run all the time. There may be days, when it is not windy. Your
typical windmill has about a 20% to 30% capacity to develop the wind energy. If you
do get surplus wind power, it can be sold to the local utility companies. These additional funds can help pay
some of the capital costs.
What is the Largest System?
The use of wind energy is still being
developed. Norway has proposed the world’s largest wind turbine at 533 feet. An energy grid has been proposed for
off shore windmill units. Denmark is trying to capitalize on the wind energy off the North Sea. The study includes
the efficiency of the wind mill system.
What About Home Use?
For home use, you need to size the type of windmill you need. Then, check you local
codes and the availability of your right of way. Your windmill may be a much smaller unit, but, it may do the
job for you.
The Time Is Now!
Wind Energy Systems are growing at an alarming rate. Even though the construction cost
is high, the return on electrical energy helps to pay for these costs. Is wind energy right for
