Wind Power

I can hear it now. The wind is whistling like crazy.  Add a windmill and you can have power to light your house. You can save money off your electric bill. You can build your own power system, here’s how.

You can save money by building your own windmills to generate power. They are generally eight to eleven feet tall and produce 700 to 1,000 watts of electricity per day. Kits are available that show you step-by-step how to build your own windmill.

Where to Begin

Before you even start wind power construction, you have to assess your situation. In the lot size that you have, do you have enough area to work and build the windmill?  You should build the windmill, so it is 100% within your right-of way, and not overlapping adjacent property.

You need to assess your wind power needs for your property. Will one windmill be enough? Will you need more than one windmill?

If you need two or three windmills, assess your available right of way for the number of windmills required.  You may be better off having a large windmill built and installed.  Do the paperwork, and you can make the right decisions.

Locate the Windmill

You need to assess your Project Location and your access to the local utility power lines. You don’t want to place the windmill near power lines. An electrician can tie the lines coming from the windmill with the utility company, electric lines and transformer.

What about a Large Windmill?

A large windmill can use wind power to lower your electric bill by 50% to 90%.  This is dependent on the amount of electricity that you use, the average annual wind speed and the cost of the unit.

A large windmill can cost about $20,000 to build.  The Wind Power Project can pay for itself in about twenty years. If utility prices continue to go up, then you will be paying for the project a lot sooner than twenty years.

What Are The Parts?

The parts of a Wind Power System include:

  1. The Blades – Usually three or more are required per windmill.  They could be steel, wood or hard plastic blades. The longer the blade, the bigger the windmill.
  2. The Hub connects the blades with the Wind Generation Motor. The Hub turns as the blades turn.
  3. Wind Generation Motor converts the turning movements (wind power) into DC Electric to power your home or building.
  4. The Body surrounds and protects the Wind Generation Motor from rain and other severe weather. The body rests on top of the tower.
  5. The Tower connects the ground footings with the body. Electric wires run down the tower to connect the Wind Generation Motor with the battery.  The Tower will be determined by your design.
  6. Below Ground Footings will need to be installed. They will keep the windmill in place. Have a Geotechnical Study done to determine how many and how long the footings should be.
  7. Batteries to store the charge and expel the charge, if necessary.  You should have battery boxes for each battery, to protect against acid overflow.
  8. DC/AC Converter to convert the DC Electrical Power to AC Electrical Power for your home or business.

That’s the completed windmill. It’s a good wind power project to build, and you will be helping our environment.

As A Result

Wind Power Projects can save you money on your electric bill.  Windmills are easy to build, especially when you have the right kit.
